What will I study?
You will study two modules in the first year:
· Exploring film form. In this module you will study how micro aspects (cinematography, mise en scène, editing, performance and sound) produce meanings and responses in many films including Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Silence of the Lambs, E.T., The Football Factory and Jaws.
· British and American film. Section A. Producers and audiences: The Hollywood and British film industries and film audiences. Section B. British film topics: Swinging Britain1963-73. Section C. US Film - comparative study: teen movies. Case study: American Pie and Kids.
In the second year you will study two modules:
· Film research and creative projects. Learning in this module focuses on two practical activities: one is research based and the other is creative work. For the research-based project you will carry out a small scale research project and present your findings. The creative work takes one of three forms, either production of a three to five minute film of the sequence, an extended step outline of the sequence or a screenplay.
· Varieties of film experience - issues and debates
Section A. World cinema: power, poverty and conflict.
Section B. Spectatorship topic: popular film and emotional response.
Section C. Single film: Fight Club
How is the course assessed?
The assessment for the film studies course is 50% coursework and 50% exams.
