College Sports Academy Hosts Mini-Olympics in Honour of World Sports Day
28 June 2012
Salford City College’s Sports Academy students competed within a mini-Olympics in aid of World Sports Day.
The event, hosted at Longford Park, Stretford, saw students from across all of the Salford City College Centres compete for medals in a variety of athletic disciplines including, 100m sprint, 4 x 1 relay, shot put and long jump.
Pendleton Sixth Form Centre were crowned the overall champions after both they and Walkden Sixth Form Centre tied on number of medals won. In a dramatic climax, tutors Alison Ormrod for Walkden and Jueliya McMahon for Pendleton raced a short sprint to decide the winner; Pendleton were crowned champions as McMahon dashed across the finish line first.
Phil Arbelo-Dolan, Sports Development Manager, said “The students and staff have had a great day competing within our own college Olympics. Congratulations to the winners along with all of the competitors, they worked really hard and there was some fantastic sporting ability on show. We’re pleased to have been able to get involved in World Sports Day, during a year where sport is the focal point of the world events stage with both Euro 2012 and London 2012 – it’s very exciting for our students to be able to contribute to these once in a life time events.”
