21 June 2012

Eccles Sixth Form Centre student, Nathan Johnston, recently travelled to Sierra Leone to conduct cricket coaching in association with Lancashire County Cricket Club and Manchester-based charity, Make It Happen.

Nathan, 17, from Astley, is currently studying BTEC Sport and looking to study Sport Rehabilitation or Coaching at University. He spent a week in Sierra Leone, along with two Lancashire Cricket Club Coaches, coaching 10 – 18 year olds in cricket. The programme was so successful and generated such positive interest; they also did some work with the Sierra Leone National Cricket Team during their visit.

A keen cricketer himself, Nathan plays and coaches for local his team, Astley & Tyldsley, and is hoping to pursue a career in sports coaching or sports development in the future.

Nathan said; “The trip was amazing and I definitely want to go back at some point again, though may be not until I have finished university. Meeting the National team was a highlight, though I really enjoyed the experience as a whole as coaching is something I am really interested in pursuing.”
