Animal Science Event at Salford City College

Students from Salford City College and Salford school pupils met up at the Eccles Centre on Thursday 28th January for a special Pre-vet and Science Society event. Professionals from across the country visited the college to pass on their expertise and advice to the budding vets and zoologists.

Various workshops and talks took place throughout the evening, which included guests such as palaeontology expert Dr. Charlotte Jeffery, from the University of Liverpool, who gave an introduction to the earliest species on the planet and Lisa Kiely from Blackpool Zoo, who introduced students to Zoology and animal care at one of Britain’s most popular zoos.

Students and staff from Nottingham University’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Science offered advice on getting in to vet school before encouraging students to have a go at some of the practical aspects of being a vet including bandaging imitation dogs and even delivering a lamb with their birthing simulator.

This Society was funded by Aimhigher Salford, the initiative that gives confidence to young people to take what they love doing and build it into a career through Higher Education.

One student who attended the event commented, “It was a fantastic opportunity and has made me consider picking Animal Science at university, I really enjoyed myself.’

Jane Rodgers, from Aimhigher Salford, said “Many young people are keen to work with animals but are often unaware of the wide range of careers open to them, particularly if they progress to Higher Education. Getting expert advice from professionals is exactly what is needed if our young people are to reach their potential.”
