Budding Vets Take Expert Advice

School pupils and students from Salford City College met up at the Eccles Centre on Wednesday 2nd December for the first ever Pre-Vet Science Society Event. Bringing young people together who share a dream of becoming the vets of the future, the society provides a rare opportunity to learn from practicing vets.

In this first event Hospital Director of the RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital, David Yates (BVSc MRCVS) gave a hands-on demonstration of the techniques used to plaster and stitch injuries in cats and dogs. Alongside the demonstrations, his stories from the profession and examples of x-rays gave a valuable insight into the veterinary industry both from a scientific and ethical perspective.

The Pre-Vet Society is one of six societies at the college, funded by Aimhigher Salford, the initiative that gives confidence to young people to take what they love doing and build it into a career through Higher Education.

Lindsey Brown, Achievement Tutor at the Eccles Centre said, “Opportunities to meet industry professionals in such a hands-on setting are invaluable to the students’ education. Careers in the veterinary world are very hard to come by, so this kind of event gives the students a rare learning experience that should aid them in their future profession.”
